Goyang Special City successfully concluded the 5th World Cities Forum (World Cities Forum 2024) on the 22nd at the Grand Ballroom of KINTEX in Ilsan.
This forum brought together experts from various fields, both domestic and international, from a total of 10 countries, including the United States, Brazil, Sweden, Spain, and Singapore. Participants shared diverse perspectives and opinions on international solidarity and cooperation for sustainable urban development.
During the opening ceremony on the 22nd, congratulatory messages were delivered by Yoo Je-cheol, former Vice Minister of Environment of Korea; Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Secretary-General of the United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC); and Jordi Vaquer, Secretary-General of Metropolis.
In his opening speech, Goyang Special City Mayor Lee Dong-hwan stated, "With complex issues such as climate change, economic inequality, and resource depletion threatening our future, cities worldwide must take the lead in finding solutions. These challenges can be addressed through urban solidarity and innovation."
During the Vision Declaration Ceremony that followed, Goyang's five key visions for a sustainable city were presented.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan emphasized, "By implementing smart city initiatives, achieving carbon neutrality at an early stage, establishing a self-sufficient city, fostering a participatory urban environment, and strengthening international cooperation, we aim to enhance citizens' quality of life and design a sustainable urban future."
